Brief recap: Odgar The Mercenary was on the road to a village besieged by a creature (on hex E12). On the road, he crossed the mountains, fought a giant centipede in a cave, and arrived at the slum village of Caerllan, where he stayed for the night.

DAY 4 - Fighting orcs on a hill

On hex G06, at the Village of Caerllan.
Weather: Clear
Hex points: 9

I woke up on my trash-filled bed, packed up my bedroll, left the tenements and Caerllan.

Hex points: 9 - 5 = 4
New hex: G08
Terrain type: 1 - Same terrain
Rolled a 6: Special Event - Hostile Encounter - Goblinkind
In Tarvannion, Goblinkind can be Orcs, Orogs (orc + human breeding) and even ogres.
Let’s create a small table of Goblinkind to fight:

Rolled a 1: 3 Orcs

As I was walking across the hills, three orcs came my way. I had nowhere to hide, no bushes, no trees, nothing.
They quickly arrived in front of me. Their hideous faces repelled me.
“What’s a human doing here?” One of them asked. The other two were already flanking me, I knew a fight was coming.
“None of your business, orc!”
“We’ll feast on your guts!” he screamed like a beast, raising his hatchet into the air.

WIT roll: 6 - success
HIT roll: 2 - failure

I instantly drew my axe and tried to take his head off, but the orc was swift and easily avoided my first attack.

As they are 3 against me, all orcs will roll +1 to their attack rolls.
Orc 1 attack roll: 3+1 - Failure
Orc 2 attack roll: 3+1 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 4+1 - Success
Orc 3 Damage roll: 3 - Failure

The talkative orc swung at empty air while I was quickly evading the hatchet. The other on my left side tried to smash me in the meantime, but failed. The last one touched me, but his weapon only slid across my armor.

WIT roll: 2 - Failure
Orc 1 attack roll: 1+1 - Failure
Orc 2 attack roll: 1+1 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 6+1 - Success
Orc 3 Damage roll: 11 - Failure

Once again, they tried but failed to wound me as I easily managed to avoid their hatchets.

HIT roll: 6 - Success
Damage roll: 2 - Failure

I didn’t do better, I hit one of them with the tip of my axe but the orc couldn’t care less.

WIT roll: 2 - Failure
Orc 1 attack roll: 4+1 - Success
Orc 1 damage roll: 1 - Failure
Orc 2 attack roll: 4+1 - Success
Orc 2 damage roll: 2 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 3+1 - Failure

Wow, they almost made me bleed! Two of them hit me, but it wasn’t hard enough to cut through my armor.

HIT roll: 6 - Success
Damage roll: 4 - Success
Orc 1 armor roll: 2 - Failure

I bash my axe in the air, hoping to hit one of them. I was surprised to see the head of the talkative one falling to the ground, spraying blood all over our faces.

WIT roll: 6 - Success
HIT roll: 5 - Success
Damage roll: 5 - Success
Orc 2 armor roll: 2 - Failure

As one of them was all gory, looking at the head of his fallen comrade, I swung my axe through his body, spreading all his guts across the grass.

Orc 3 attack roll: 3 - Failure

The last one, in shock, attacked but struck the ground instead of my skull.

WIT roll: 3 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 1 - Failure

Enraged by what I’ve done, he turned himself against me, swung, and failed.

HIT roll: 2 - Failure

I wasn’t doing any better.

WIT roll: 5 - Success
HIT roll: 2 - Failure

I attacked again, but he was quick enough to avoid it.

Orc 3 attack roll: 2 - Failure

But not quick enough to hit me either.

WIT roll: 4 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 2 - Failure

“Look at us, trying to beat the shit out of each other, failing miserably.” I said.
He laughed and screamed.

HIT roll: 5 - Success
Damage roll: 5 - Success
Orc 3 armor roll: 5 - Success

I brought my axe down with all my strength, but his leather armor deflected the blow.

WIT roll: 2 - Failure
Orc 3 attack roll: 1 - Failure

“Stop moving you human bastard!”
The orc was losing his temper.

HIT roll: 3 - Success
Damage roll: 6 - Success
Orc 3 armor roll: 4 - Failure

I finally hit his head, ripping apart his brain, as he looked at me and screamed.

There’s no rules for looting in Hacksilver, but the character advancement is driven a lot by money, so let’s say there is a 3 in 6 chance that they have d6x2 hacksilver in their pockets (each one).
Orc 1 : rolled a 3, found 10 hacksilvers
Orc 2 : rolled a 3, found 2 hacksilvers
Orc 3 : rolled a 4.

I searched their pockets, and found 12 hacksilvers.
That’s all for my trouble. At least, I got some hacksilver out of it.
I continued south, and finally made camp for the night.

-1 ration.
I use all of my Hex Points, but I still need 1 more Hex Points to fully cross the hex.

DAY 5 - A long day walking

On hex G08, only 1 Hex Point remains to fully cross it.
Weather: Bright (+2 Hex Points)
Hex Points: 9 + 2 = 11
I go further south-west. Hex Points: 11 - 1 = 10
Now on hex F09.
Terrain type: 5 - roll new terrain type - 1 - Road
Rolled a 4: Safe Passage
I go further south. Hex Points : 10 - 3 = 7
Now on hex F11.
Terrain type: 3 - Same terrain type - Road
Rolled a 5: Challenge/Hazard - Lost direction
Hex Points: 0

I walked the whole day, along a quiet road, with nothing particularly interesting happening.
After a while, I started feeling sleepy and lost my bearings.
I set up camp here for the night.

-1 ration

DAY 6 - The village of Abaraeon

Still in hex F11
Weather: 4 - Clear
Hex Points: 9
Going south-west.
Roll a 4 - Safe Passage
Hex Points: 9 - 3 = 6
Now on hex E12.
I won’t roll for what is here, as I arrived at the besieged village.

For the next part, I will use a simple Oracle :

Are the doors of the village closed? No

I approached what I’ve heard is the besieged village.
Strangely, the doors weren’t closed.

Is there anyone outside? No, but
A corpse? Yes, but
Almost dead, but not dead yet? Yes

Right before entering the village, there was a corpse on the floor. At least, that was what I thought.
“Harrrr….pl….please…” the sound was coming from that male body. I leaned towards him and said:
“What happened here?”
“Please….sir…the beast…argh” Blood was coming from his mouth. It was his last breath.
I already knew there was a beast here, but this confirmed that.
I entered the village.

Is there anyone past the entrance? No
Do I hear something? Yes
Is it human? No
Is it the beast? No
Is it animal? Yes, but
Are the animals in pain? No
Are there animals roaming in the slum? No
Are there animals in cages? Yes

There was no one in that part of the village.
The only thing I saw was chicken and rabbit in cages, near the tavern.
They weren’t dead, so they weren’t here for a long time.
I opened the tavern’s door, and entered.

Is there anyone in the tavern? No
Any dead bodies? No
Is there any edible food? Yes
Let’s say it’s d3 rations - 2 rations added.

I took some food, and returned outside.
I approached the abandoned building, which reminded me of the Caerllan’s tenements, just to see if I saw someone here.

Is there someone near the building? Yes, but
Is it dead? No, but
Near dead? Yes

Once again, a near dead-body, a woman this time.
I leaned towards her, she wasn’t saying anything.
“Where are you hurt?”
She didn’t answer.
“Have you seen the beast?”
She looked at me, a tear in her eye, and died in a whisper.
I left her there and approached the apothecary store in the bourgeois district.

Is there anyone here? No
Is the beast here? No
Any sounds? Yes
Beast sound? No
Human? Yes, but
In pain? Yes

I heard screaming near the market and ran there.
When I arrived, corpses were all along the place, half eaten, with guts and bones everywhere. Blood filled the soil like it was flooded.
In front of me: the beast, devouring someone.
“Aaaaaahhhh fuck please! Aaaaaah”
Pretty last words.

To generate the monster, I will use Silver Nightingale’s Ultimate Solo RPG Toolkit, in which there’s a Monster Maker. I’ll only use “color” and “form” as the rest will make the monster way more difficult and, with Hacksilver rules, it will already be a harsh fight.
Color: White
Form: Reptilian
Like a giant white snake!
Monster [TN 3], 4 wounds, bite [TN 4], scale [TN 5]

WIT roll: 3 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 5 - Success
Giant snake damage roll: 6 - Success
My armor roll: 3 - Failure
I take 1 wound, and so I’m battered (-1 HIT)

The Giant Snake tossed aside the poor body it had been eating away. The carcass fell to the ground like a piece of meat.
It crawled towards me so fast I couldn’t escape its gigantic mouth.
The beast bit my arm so hard it made me scream.

HIT roll: 3-1 - Failure

I tried to hit these devilish creatures with my axe, but the thing was moving too fast.

WIT roll: 2 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 1 - Failure

Luckily enough, I’m also quick.
It opened its mouth to strike, but I jumped aside and rolled away.

HIT roll: 3-1 - Failure

As I was rolling, I tried a hit but missed.

WIT roll: 6 - Success
HIT roll: 6-1 - Success
Damage roll: 5 - Success
Giant snake armor roll: 6 - Success

I managed to touch it but the axe didn’t penetrate its thick scales.

Giant snake attack roll: 1 - Failure

Once again, it snapped its jaw in the air.

WIT roll: 1 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 3 - Success
Giant snake damage roll: 3 - Failure

Ouch! It was close!

HIT roll: 2 -1 - Failure

This creature is definitely too fast! And my arm hurts!

WIT roll: 5 - Success
HIT roll: 2-1 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 3 - Success
Giant snake damage roll: 6 - success
My armor roll: 1 - Failure
+1 wound, I’m now blooded (-1 to all stats)

I quickly tried another strike at its skull but my arm failed me and the snake took advantage of it.
It clamped its jaws around my body and started chewing. I spit blood.
I fell on the floor, all shocked.
“Will it be the death of me?
I won’t defeat this foe alone, I need help.” I thought to myself.
I needed to flee.

I will use my home rule to flee the fight:
Test GRIT. Success: escape, failure: the foe attacks.
GRIT roll: 3-1 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 3 - Success
Giant snake damage roll: 2 - Failure

I stood up and ran toward the entrance, but the beast was too quick.
It caught me, but didn’t deal much )damage.
But I can’t stay here or I will die.

Test GRIT to flee: 2-1 - Failure
Giant snake attack roll: 5 - Success
Giant snake damage roll: 5 - Success
My armor roll: 3 - Failure
+1 wound. I’m now broken…
I need to test GRIT or I will fall in battle.
GRIT roll: 1-1 - Failure

As I got back to my feet, the snake immediately bashed the air and grabbed me.
It squeezed so hard I could feel all of my bones breaking.
I collapsed to the ground.

Will the snake attack again? No.
End of the fight.

As I fall in battle, I need to test GRIT.
Failure will result in a permanent wound (so a permanent -1 to HIT).
GRIT roll: 4-1 - Failure

Odgar lies on the ground, broken and barely conscious.
The snake left his body for the moment.
What will happen to him?
You’ll know in the next episode!
